1分間のとても小さい円舞曲？！Minute Waltz?!
円舞曲やメヌエットを初めとする「舞曲」の発祥や、その名称の起源などについて質問を受けました。
「メヌエット」については、menuというフランス語に由来する「小さいステップ」というものです。この言葉を含む円舞曲に「子犬のワルツ」があります。ショパンによって作曲されたこの作品は、舞踏のための付随音楽ではなく、器楽曲として独立した地位を持っていることは、既に認められている通りです。
このタイトルは作曲者自身によって付けられたものではなく、後世の人によるということも周知のことと存じます。英語圏の国では、「子犬」という語に代わって、「１分間」という語が用いられることがあるそうです。
言うまでもなく、それは同じスペルを持つminuteという語が、マイヌート（小さい）という発音と、ミニッツ（分）という二つ（議事録という意味もあるので、それを含めると三つ）と混同されて、後世に誤って伝わってしまったということです。
ともあれ、子犬のワルツを６０秒で弾くのは不可能ですから、時間にとらわれず、演奏者お一人お一人に合ったテンポで、余裕をもって表現して欲しいと願っています。
In a lesson yesterday, one of my students asked me about the Minuet Waltz.
The word was adapted from the Italian “minuetto” and French “menuet”. The meaning of “menu” is slender or small in French. So, it has been known as very small steps. I referred to one of the waltzes by Frederic Chopin – Opus 64-1. This is known throughout the world as “minute waltz”.
She told me that she had heard of a piece which is required to be played in one minute. I proceeded to correct her misconception by explaining the nickname of the title to mean “small”, not “one minute” waltz. Actually, I’ve heard the title of Minuet Waltz pronounced “mínət”, which is quite common in the US even though it is occasionally mistakenly pronounced “mainjúːt”.
This piece is fast, but please don’t try to play too fast. By no means should you attempt to play the piece within one minute. It needs nearly two minutes on average. Bear in mind that you should enjoy playing the piece without worrying about the time too much.
