揺れ Jolts
「ミクロコスモス」というバルトークによって書かれた教本を、レッスンで使用する教室が増えていますね。これは、ちょっと扱いに難しい曲集なので、指導者の先生、生徒さんの両方にある程度の専門性が要求されます。
この教本は全6巻に分かれており、その各曲に「演奏時間」が書かれています。「バルトーク自身が、ストップウォッチを持って生徒を指導していた」ということは、広く知られていますね。
私の生徒の一人が「ミクロコスモス」中、「揺れ」というタイトルの曲を指定どおり「49秒」で弾き終えました。最初は「まぐれかな？」と思ったのですが、二度、三度と繰り返しても、やはり49秒きっかりでした！
「もしバルトーク自身がそこにいたならば、その生徒の演奏を聞いて、彼はどんなにか喜んだだろう！」と思うと、つい私も微笑んでしまいました。
Jolts
Lately, quite a lot of teachers are using the pieces, ‘Mikrokosmos’ (German for Microcosm), by Bela Bartok when teaching the piano. This method produces various reactions from students. While some get into it, others quickly switch to an alternative method.
The content of Mikrokosmos has some notable unique features, for instance, every piece of this method has its own set performance time besides the tempo set for the metronome.
It is widely known that Bartok himself used a stop-watch while teaching, which shows the strict adherence to tempo in his compositions.
However, it is obviously difficult to practice a whole piece while keeping the metronome going due to the irregularity of the content such as, change of time signature/tempo mid-piece.
Incidentally, when I timed the entire performance of one of my students, it finished on 49 seconds sharp :surprisingly the exact same length as that determined by the composer. As the feelings of the student merged with the tempo, he played the same piece entitled ‘Jolts’, and finished it exactly when the digital number of the stop-watch showed 49 seconds again!
I smiled to myself thinking how delightful it would be if the composer - Bartok had been there!
