The Enduring Charm of Liszt’s “Liebestraum

Christmas carols and holiday hits may be filling the airwaves, but there’s one piece of music that continues to captivate listeners year-round: Franz Liszt’s “Liebestraum”. This enchanting composition, known for its romantic melodies and intricate piano techniques, holds a special place in the hearts of many.

“Liebestraum”, which translates to “Dream of Love”, is based on a poem by German writer Ferdinand Freiligrath. The poem explores themes of love and loss, which Liszt masterfully translates into music. The piece is divided into three sections, each separated by fast cadenzas that require advanced technical skills and nimble fingerwork.

Interestingly, “Liebestraum” was composed in response to the death of Liszt’s friend and contemporary composer, Frederic Chopin. The piece is influenced by the nocturnes genre, which Chopin popularized.

But what makes “Liebestraum” so universally loved? Perhaps it’s the calming effect of its repeating arpeggios and transitioning harmonies. Or maybe it’s the thrill of finding a surprise in your Christmas stocking, which could be anything from a lump of coal to a diamond. This element of surprise, brought about by the “power of belief”, is the greatest gift of all.

Even Elvis Presley was a fan of “Liebestraum”, using it as inspiration for his song “Today, Tomorrow and Forever” in the movie “Viva Las Vegas”. This just goes to show that the magic of “Liebestraum” transcends time and genres.

So, as we grow older and continue to believe in the magic of music, let’s keep the spirit of “Liebestraum” alive in our hearts. After all, the magic of Santa Claus – or in this case, the magic of Liszt’s music – is an eternal gift for all those who believe.
