ピアノの鍵 The Locked Piano
「どうしてピアノを開けるのはこんなに大変なの？」と子どもが尋ねました。すると、そこにいた大人が、次のように答えました。「それは、ピアノには沢山のカギが付いているからだよ。」
グランドピアノを全開するには、大屋根を持ち上げる必要があるので、小さな子供さんがこんな疑問を持つのは自然なことですね。
錠とセットで使う「鍵＝カギ＝キー」と、ピアノに使われている「鍵＝ケン＝キー」が、どうして同じ文字によって表現されるのかということを、「鍵盤楽器の起源」に遡って、その語源から探ってみたいと思います。
鍵盤のついた楽器のうち最古の物と言えば「パイプオルガン」です。現在のそれに比べると随分小さかったようですが、いずれにしても、パイプに空気を送り込むことによって音が出る仕組みになっており、音を出すときだけ空気を送り込む「弁」のような物を「キー」と呼んでいたようです。パイプの出入り口を開閉する部品なので、「鍵」という名称には納得出来ますね。これを動かす仕組み全体のことを、後になって「キー」と呼ぶようになったのが、「鍵盤」という名称の由来です。
しかしながら、パイプオルガンはヨーロッパ生まれですから、実は語源は「キー」という英語ではなく、「クラヴィス」（＝「鍵」）というラテン語にあるのです。
さて、「どうしてピアノは簡単に開かないの？」という最初の疑問に戻りましょう。ピアノの中にはキーが８８個もあるのですから、簡単に開くハズがないですね！

Let’s take a look at the word origins behind ‘keys for locks’ and ‘keys on keyboards’.
The most ancient instrument with keys is the venerable pipe-organ. Originally, it was smaller than the model used today, but both have the same basic mechanism. They generate sounds by taking in air through an open valve. This valve is opened and closed when a key is pressed, it's easy to see why the "key" became associated with the instrument, isn't it? Later on, all parts related to the key came to be called ‘Keys’. However, as the pipe organ was a European invention, originally, the Latin term for key, clavis was used. (As in clavichord.)
Now, let’s go back to the question posed by the child that kicked this all off, “Why is it so hard to open the piano?” It is never going to be easy to open the piano because it needs eighty eight keys, and they are all insidiously placed on the inside! Bada-bing Bada-boom!!
