幅の狭い鍵盤

グレン・グールドに影響を与えた音楽家として、昨日のブログの中で、ジョゼフ・ホフマンの名前を挙げました。今日は、彼についてお話しすることにしますね。

ホフマン氏は、幼少の頃から、「神童」として世間に認められており、しばしば、モーツァルトと並べて評されていた人物です。

彼は、5歳にしてリサイタルを開催し、その2年後には、ベートーヴェンのハ短調の協奏曲を好演するという偉業を成し遂げています。9歳になったときには、演奏旅行でヨーロッパ各地を巡っています。

彼の師匠は、モシュコフスキーやルービンシュタインといった巨匠でした。彼は、聴奏にも優れており、誰かが弾いたフレーズを正確に模倣、再現していたそうです。

彼がスタインウェイ社（一流の楽器メーカー）に、「幅の狭い鍵盤のピアノを製作できないか？」と打診したことは、大変面白いことだと思っています。

彼はあまり大きな手を持っていませんでしたので、そのように考えたことは自然なことかも知れませんね。

Josef Hofmann (1876-1957) was a child prodigy and was often compared to Mozart. He played his first public concert at age 5, and two years later performed Beethoven's C minor concerto.

When he was 9 years old, he toured all over Euroupe. He studied with famous pianists Morits Moszkowski and Anton Rubinstein.

Hofmann was admired for his amazing technical skills and refined playing. His ear was incredible; he was able to memorize and play back a piece by just listening to it.

Hofmann knew a lot about the way pianos are built, and asked the Steinway company to design pianos with slightly narrower keys especially for him that he would use for his concerts.

He had small hands and the narrower keys worked better for him, and he was an inventor and wrote the book "Piano Playing with Questions Answered".
