メトロノームが大好きな子どもたちがいる一方で、そうでない子どもたちもいます。
前者は、これを「面白い機械仕掛け」と認識しています。
ウィステリア・ピアノクラスで、主として用いているのは、透過性がある従来のアナログタイプですので、子どもたちはこれを「中が見えるゼンマイ仕掛けの玩具」と勘違いしています。
一方、後者の子どもたちの目には、同じメトロノームが、「厳格で口うるさい監督」と映っているようです。
さて、カール・ツェルニーが自身の作品中に書いたメトロームの指示について、考察してみたいと思います。
それら数字に直面した殆どの生徒さんは、そのテンポの速さにたじろいだ経験をお持ちではないでしょうか。
私はマーティン・ヌーディンという人による「ツェルニーの不可能なテンポ」というタイトルの論文を読んだことがあります。
それによると、彼が活躍していた時代にあっても、速過ぎるという批評があったそうです。
また、彼のメトロノームが壊れていたという説もあります。
その時代のピアノのタッチは、現代のものよりも軽かったという見方もありますが、昔のピアノであってもその速度では演奏不可能なものが多々あります。
更には、ツェルニー氏が「速度」によって人々を驚愕させることで、馬鹿げているとしか言いようのない名声を得ることを意図したと考える人々もいます。
どの説が真実を語っているにせよ、現代において、ツェルニーのエチュードを、メトロノームの表記どおりのテンポで指導するピアノ教師はいないと思います。

Next, the touches of the keys were far lighter than our modern pianos.
